Bayfield, ON

Walk There are multiple spots off Tuyll Street providing access to the beach. We usually take the 5 min walk here when visiting. As the beach is usually pretty quiet, I let Rita off-leash. She loves zooming along the sand and splashing in Lake Huron! I do have to keep her from rolling in the dead fish though! The beach leads right up to Pioneer Park, which is community-owned. In 1945, Bayfield resident Lucy Woods Diehl rallied together her friends, raising the $2000 required to sabe the parcel of land from development. It continues to rely on donations today, and volunteers help with maintenance and fence-building. The park features benches, BBQ spots and even an area for volleyball. Further along is the pier where you can watch the boats venture out on the lake.

Shop The village of Bayfield has the small-town dog-friendly charm, much like St Jacob’s. The gift shops mostly allowed dogs, and there is plenty on offer, from T-shirts to local artwork and novelty items. I recommend visiting Archies, Hive, Xclusive Elements, The Spotted Cow and, further down the road, Dublin Mercentile. Unfortunately, Bayfield Pet Corner has now closed.

Eating The Black Dog really couldn’t get away with not being dog-friendly! I’ve been here multiple times, both with and without Rita. The servers are always friendly towards pups and the patio is a very pleasant space to spend time in. Most importantly, the food is delicious! I recommend trying something the halloumi flatbread, or have the Shwarma plate halloumi-fied!
